The number of zones is the biggest cost driver. A single-zone system uses one outdoor condenser connected to one indoor head — simple and affordable. Multi-zone systems use one larger condenser serving 2–5 heads; each additional zone adds $700–$2,000 for equipment and $300–$700 for labor.
Brand tier significantly affects price and reliability. Premium brands (Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu) cost $500–$2,000 more per system but offer better SEER ratings, longer warranties (10–12 years parts), and superior cold-weather performance.
Installation complexity matters too. A straight shot through an exterior wall is simple. Running line sets through crawlspaces, attics, or long distances adds labor time and materials.

Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin are the gold standard — SEER ratings 20–33, excellent cold-climate performance, 12-year parts warranties (with registered installer). Worth the $500–$2,000 premium for whole-home systems.
LG, Gree, and Bosch IDS offer strong mid-range value at SEER 18–24. Good warranties (5–10 years) and wide contractor availability. Best for: bedrooms, home offices, or supplemental zones where you don't need peak efficiency.
Standard mini-splits lose efficiency below 20°F. "Hyper Heat" or "H2i" models (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu) work efficiently down to -13°F — replacing both AC and oil/propane heat in cold climates. Add $400–$800 over standard models.
