Contract price in Canadian dollars (CAD), BEFORE sales tax. With Ontario's HST 13%: C$5,722 – C$11,444.
What sales tax does to this job in Ontario
HST 13% applies to the whole contract — labour and materials alike. There is no separate provincial line and no exemption for labour.
Where the band comes from — and who disagrees
Walls are C$2–C$4 per square foot of wall, two coats, from one national Canadian market guide (Constructem, 2026-07-20), scaled by ×1.0214: Job Bank's median wage for painters and decorators (NOC 73112) is C$29.00/hour here against C$28.00 nationally, damped by a 60% labour share (+2.1%).
ESTIMATED geometry: wall area is derived from floor area and room count assuming square rooms — each room's perimeter is 4 × √(its floor area) — times the ceiling height, with NO deduction for doors and windows (so it runs high). Baseboard length is the same perimeter. Enter your measured wall area instead if you have it.
A wage differential is not a local price. The labour differential is a Job Bank WAGE ratio, not a local price, and Canada's wage data and Canada's renovation price guides disagree about two major metros. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages 15% above the national median and Vancouver's 3% below it, while Canadian renovation price guides place Montréal below the national average and Vancouver 25% to 40% above it. So in Montréal this calculator's figure is pushed up and in Vancouver down — the opposite of what those guides report — and no provincial or city price level is modelled at all: only the sales tax and this wage ratio change with the address. The wage basket is Job Bank's five-trade renovation composite — Carpenters (NOC 72310), Electricians (except industrial and power system) (NOC 72200), Plumbers (NOC 72300), Painters and decorators (except interior decorators) (NOC 73112), Construction trades helpers and labourers (NOC 75110). It does NOT include roofers, sheet-metal workers or HVAC technicians, so for eavestrough and furnace-humidifier work the differential is a proxy for the installer's labour, not a measurement of it.

It puts Montréal below Toronto; Job Bank's painter wage puts it above. Both are shown.
What this calculator will not add
Not priced: a one-coat discount (every source read treats two coats as standard and none prices one), heavy patching or drywall repair (named by every source, priced by none), doors and cabinets (no per-unit Canadian price read), and a high-ceiling premium on top of the larger wall area — publishers quote that premium against per-room prices, where the extra area is already inside it.
Every figure is in Canadian dollars. The headline is before tax; the tax line follows the province the house is in, from government sources, and the wage is Job Bank's. Prices are dated Canadian commercial market sources. Estimate only; get written quotes.

The rates, in C$
- Walls, two coats: C$2–C$4 per sq ft of wall (Constructem, national).
- Ceilings: C$3.50–C$6.50 per sq ft — the publisher's ceilings-only rate, so it can run high on a combined job.
- Baseboards and trim: C$2–C$4 per linear foot.
- Colour change: 20% to 40% more on the walls; wallpaper removal: C$1–C$3 per sq ft (RenoCalc).
Canadian publishers disagree about the wall rate: a GTA painting company prints walls-only two-coat work at C$2.00–C$3.00 per sq ft of wall, a Toronto company C$1.80–C$3.00, and RenoCalc C$3–C$6. They are shown beside the result and never averaged in. These are commercial market figures; no Canadian government body publishes a painting price.
The painter's wage where you live — and why it is not a price
The only local adjustment is Job Bank's median hourly wage for painters and decorators (NOC 73112, 2025 wage file, revised 2025-11-19), applied to the 60% labour share of the job. A GTA painting company's own regional price table points the other way for Montréal and Vancouver, so both are shown.

A worked example: 1,200 sq ft in the City of Toronto
Five rooms, 8-foot ceilings, walls only. Square rooms give a combined perimeter of 4 × √(1,200 × 5) = 309.8 feet, so about 2,478.7 sq ft of wall. Job Bank's Toronto painter median of C$29.00 against C$28.00 nationally, on a 60% labour share, is a multiplier of 1.0214. Walls: C$5,063.65 to C$10,127.30 before tax; with 13% HST, C$5,721.92 to C$11,443.85.

Frequently asked questions
How much does interior painting cost per square foot in Canada?
Constructem's Canadian guide, dated 20 July 2026, prices interior walls at C$2 to C$4 per square foot of wall, ceilings on their own at C$3.50 to C$6.50 per square foot, and trim and baseboards at C$2 to C$4 per linear foot, with two coats as the standard. Other Canadian publishers disagree: a GTA painting company prices walls-only, two-coat work at C$2.00 to C$3.00 per square foot of wall, a Toronto painting company at C$1.80 to C$3.00, and RenoCalc at C$3 to C$6. All before GST, HST or PST.
What does it cost to paint the interior of a 1,200 sq ft house in Toronto?
For walls only across five rooms with 8-foot ceilings, this calculator estimates about 2,479 square feet of wall, assuming square rooms and no deduction for doors and windows. In the City of Toronto that gives a low estimate of about C$5,064 and a high of about C$10,127 before tax, after Job Bank's Toronto painter wage adds about 2%. Ontario's 13% HST takes the low to about C$5,722 and the high to about C$11,444. Ceilings, baseboards and a colour change are extra lines.
How much more does a colour change cost?
RenoCalc, a Canadian renovation publisher, says a colour change adds 20% to 40%, because a big change needs a primer or extra coats. This calculator applies that to the walls. No Canadian source read prices a one-coat refresh, so no discount for one coat is offered.
Do painters charge PST in British Columbia?
Not on the invoice. The Province of British Columbia states that services related to real property are not subject to PST, so a house-painting contract in BC shows GST at 5% only. The painter pays 7% PST on the paint and materials and prices it into the quote. Manitoba works the same way with its 7% RST. Saskatchewan charges GST 5% plus PST 6% on the whole job, labour included; Ontario charges 13% HST.
Why does the calculator put Montréal above Toronto?
Because the only local adjustment is Job Bank's median wage for painters and decorators (NOC 73112), and Job Bank publishes C$34.00 an hour in Montréal against C$29.00 in Toronto and C$28.00 nationally. That is a wage, not a price. A GTA painting company's own regional table puts Greater Montréal below the GTA. Both are shown on the page rather than averaged.
