Solar Panel Cost Calculator India — With PM Surya Ghar Subsidy
Calculate the right solar system size, PM Surya Ghar subsidy, net installation cost, annual savings, and payback period for your home.
What you'll need
- Monthly electricity consumption (units from your bill)
- Available roof area (sq ft, shadow-free)
- Preferred system type — on-grid / off-grid / hybrid
How It Works
Enter monthly electricity usage
Your monthly units (kWh) from your electricity bill. This determines the right system size.
Enter available roof area
Shadow-free flat roof area in sq ft. This may limit how big a system you can install.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cost of solar panel installation per kW in India?
Solar panel installation cost in India (2026): On-grid systems ₹50,000–₹70,000/kW, Off-grid (with battery) ₹70,000–₹1,00,000/kW, Hybrid ₹80,000–₹1,20,000/kW. These are all-inclusive costs — panels, inverter, mounting structure, wiring, and installation. Prices have fallen 40–50% in the last 5 years.
What is PM Surya Ghar subsidy and how much can I get?
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana provides subsidy for residential on-grid rooftop solar: ₹30,000/kW for up to 2kW capacity and ₹18,000/kW for the additional 1kW (i.e., 2–3kW). Maximum subsidy is ₹78,000 for a 3kW system. Apply at pmsuryaghar.gov.in through your DISCOM. The subsidy is credited to your bank account after installation verification by the DISCOM.
How much roof area is needed for solar panels?
Each 400W solar panel requires about 25–30 sq ft of shadow-free flat roof area. A 3kW system needs approximately 8 panels = 200–240 sq ft. A south-facing slope improves generation by 10–20%. Avoid shading from water tanks, parapet walls, or neighbouring structures — even partial shading significantly reduces output.
What is the payback period for rooftop solar in India?
After PM Surya Ghar subsidy, most on-grid rooftop solar systems pay back in 4–7 years. A 3kW system in Maharashtra or Gujarat (high sun + good net metering policy) may pay back in 4–5 years. After payback, you generate free electricity for 15–20 more years. Solar panels are typically warranted for 25 years at 80% output.
