A modular kitchen quote hides its biggest cost swing in one word — "board." Plywood vs particle board: the two standards behind every carcass quote

A quote that says "plywood" without naming a standard number should be treated as unverified until the ISI mark on the delivered sheet confirms which one you actually received.
The sink base unit and any cabinet within splash range of the sink or hob is the one place where the cheaper material is a genuine risk, not just a cost trade-off: IS 710:2024, BIS's standard for marine (BWP-grade) plywood, requires the adhesive bonding the veneers to be based on a synthetic resin conforming to BWP Type of IS 848 — a moisture-resistance requirement that neither general-purpose plywood (IS 303) nor standard particle board (IS 12823) is built to. Ask specifically whether the sink-base carcass is quoted in marine-grade ply, and check the delivered sheet's ISI mark against that answer.

GST context for a kitchen fit-out — what changed and what didn't

If the kitchen includes an adjoining utility or wash area with flooring exposed to detergents and spills, a separate, more specialised standard applies: IS 4457:2007 covers unglazed vitreous acid-resisting ceramic tiles, a chemical-resistant category distinct from the general pressed-ceramic tile used for the backsplash. Ask which standard number is on the box for each zone; they are not interchangeable specifications even though both are "ceramic tile."
The plumbing standard behind the sink connection
If the kitchen fit-out includes rerouting or extending the water-supply line to the sink, the correct standard for that pipe is IS 4985:2021, BIS's current standard for unplasticized PVC (UPVC) pipes used for potable water supply — a different standard from the one covering waste/drain discharge pipe. A wrong or unlicensed pipe sits behind the cabinetry, where a leak is expensive to reach.
A directional check on material cost trend, not a kitchen price
