What New Eavestroughs Cost in Canada — Before and After Your Province's Sales Tax

Price the run by the linear foot in Canadian dollars, add the downspouts, and see what the province does to the invoice: 13% HST on the whole job in Ontario, 5% GST in Alberta, and in British Columbia a 5% invoice with the 7% PST already buried in the contractor's price. City of Toronto readers also get the City's mandatory downspout rule and its C$500 aid.

City of Toronto — downspouts cannot drain to the sewer

Inside the City of Toronto, disconnection is mandatory for every property owner, except where it is hazardous or not technically feasible (Toronto Municipal Code, Property Standards Bylaw §629-20). The City reimburses the labour and materials, up to C$500, where combined household income is C$50,000 or less and the owner is a senior aged 65 or older; a senior aged 60–64 receiving certain Old Age Security benefits; a person aged 50 or older receiving a registered pension; or a person receiving disability benefits.

If any downspout still runs into the sewer, enter your disconnection quote under Fine-Tune to see whether the City would reimburse it.

Where the per-foot band comes from — and who disagrees

Aluminum: C$5–C$13 per linear foot installed, from one national Canadian guide (RenoQuotes, 2026-08-25), scaled by ×1.0426 — Job Bank's renovation-trade wage composite for Toronto against the national median, damped by a 60% labour share. The national guide publishes one aluminum band. Calgary and Quebec contractor ladders split aluminum by profile and gauge and price every split above this band's floor — see the cross-check table.

Read the low end as a floor, not a contractor price. The per-foot band is one national guide's, and every regional contractor ladder read for this page prices aluminum above its C$5 floor. RenoQuotes publishes no provincial or city variation, so no provincial price level is modelled — only your province's sales tax and the wage differential below change with the address.

A wage differential is not a local price. The labour differential is a Job Bank WAGE ratio, not a local price, and Canada's wage data and Canada's renovation price guides disagree about two major metros. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages 15% above the national median and Vancouver's 3% below it, while Canadian renovation price guides place Montréal below the national average and Vancouver 25% to 40% above it. So in Montréal this calculator's figure is pushed up and in Vancouver down — the opposite of what those guides report — and no provincial or city price level is modelled at all: only the sales tax and this wage ratio change with the address. The wage basket is Job Bank's five-trade renovation composite — Carpenters (NOC 72310), Electricians (except industrial and power system) (NOC 72200), Plumbers (NOC 72300), Painters and decorators (except interior decorators) (NOC 73112), Construction trades helpers and labourers (NOC 75110). It does NOT include roofers, sheet-metal workers or HVAC technicians, so for eavestrough and furnace-humidifier work the differential is a proxy for the installer's labour, not a measurement of it.

  • Angel's Roofing (Calgary): 5-inch aluminum, .027, C$7–C$9 per foot installed
  • Angel's Roofing (Calgary): 5-inch aluminum, .032, C$9–C$12 per foot installed
  • Angel's Roofing (Calgary): 6-inch aluminum, C$10–C$14 per foot installed
  • 123Couvreur (Quebec): Aluminum .027, C$9–C$14 per foot installed
  • 123Couvreur (Quebec): Aluminum .032, C$12–C$16 per foot installed

Downspouts are a Calgary contractor's C$80–C$150 each (×1.0468 against Calgary); a Quebec publisher prints C$40–C$90. Both are shown rather than averaged. Linear footage is an input rather than something inferred from floor area, because a bungalow and a two-storey house on the same footprint have about the same eave length and very different ladder work. Measure along the eaves, or take it off the roof plan; Calgary publisher Angel's Roofing treats 140–160 feet as a typical single-storey house and 180–220 feet as a typical two-storey one.

What this calculator will not add

Heat cable. Heat cable is not priced. The only Canadian per-foot installed figure located for this build was one Hamilton contractor's page from 2024, which was not retrieved and is a single source in any case.

Fascia and soffit. The Calgary guide prices a spot fascia repair at C$200 – C$500 and one side replaced at C$600 – C$1,500. Nobody can see rot behind a trough from the ground, so neither is added. No permit fee is priced either.

Every figure is in Canadian dollars. The headline is before tax; the tax line follows the province the house is in. Cost figures are dated Canadian commercial publishers — no Canadian government body publishes an installed eavestrough price. The Toronto downspout rule and aid are the City's own. Estimate only; get written quotes.

The per-foot ladder, in C$ installed

The four material bands are one national Canadian guide's own table, read on one date, so the steps between them mean something. Two contractor guides — one in Calgary, one in Quebec — are shown beside it as a cross-check and never blended in.

Read the national low end as a floor. Every regional contractor ladder read for this page prices aluminum above the national C$5 per foot, and the national guide publishes no provincial or city variation. This calculator therefore does not model a provincial price level: only sales tax and a Job Bank wage differential change with the address, and a wage differential is not a local price — Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages above the national median and Vancouver's below it, the opposite of what Canadian price guides report.

City of Toronto: the downspout has to come off the sewer

The City of Toronto makes downspout disconnection mandatory for every property owner in the City, except where it is hazardous or not technically feasible (Toronto Municipal Code, Property Standards Bylaw §629-20). A new eavestrough job is when that gets done. The City reimburses labour and materials up to C$500 where combined household income is C$50,000 or less and the owner is a senior aged 65 or older; a senior aged 60–64 receiving certain Old Age Security benefits; a person aged 50 or older receiving a registered pension; or a person receiving disability benefits.

The income test is “or less”: C$50,000 exactly qualifies, C$50,001 does not, and on a C$750 disconnection quote that single dollar is worth C$500. The rule and the aid are the City's own and do not reach Mississauga, Brampton or the rest of the GTA. Choose “City of Toronto” in the calculator and the three Toronto fields appear under Fine-Tune.

What this calculator refuses to add

Heat cable. Heat cable is not priced. The only Canadian per-foot installed figure located for this build was one Hamilton contractor's page from 2024, which was not retrieved and is a single source in any case.

Fascia, soffit and permits. Rot behind a trough is invisible from the ground, so fascia repair is shown as a published band on the result and never added; no municipal permit fee was read.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eavestrough installation cost per foot in Canada?

RenoQuotes' national Canadian guide, updated 25 August 2026, prices installed eavestroughs per linear foot at C$4 to C$9 for vinyl, C$5 to C$13 for aluminum, C$5 to C$15 for galvanized steel and C$18 to C$40 for copper, with downspouts, removal and guards quoted separately. Contractor guides price aluminum higher than that national floor: a Calgary contractor puts 5-inch aluminum at C$7 to C$9 per foot in standard gauge and C$9 to C$12 in heavier gauge, and a Quebec publisher puts aluminum at C$9 to C$14. The widest disagreement is copper, where the Calgary and Quebec guides print C$30 to C$50 and C$30 to C$55. All figures are Canadian dollars and before GST, HST or PST.

What does a whole eavestrough job cost for a Canadian house?

On the national ladder, 150 linear feet of aluminum is C$750 to C$1,950 before labour adjustment, and four downspouts at the Calgary contractor's C$80 to C$150 each add C$320 to C$600. In Toronto, after the Job Bank labour differential, the low estimate for that job is about C$1,117 and the high about C$2,661 before tax; Ontario's 13% HST takes them to about C$1,262 and C$3,007. That low end is the national guide's floor, not a contractor price. Regional contractor guides start higher: a Calgary contractor prices a single-storey house of 140 to 160 feet at C$1,200 to C$2,000 before downspouts, and says most need 4 to 6; a Quebec publisher prices a 140-foot aluminum house at C$1,260 to C$2,240, with downspouts at C$40 to C$90 each. No provincial price level is modelled — only sales tax and a Job Bank wage differential change with the address.

Do I pay PST on new eavestroughs in British Columbia?

Not on the invoice. The Province of British Columbia states that services related to real property are not subject to PST, so a BC eavestrough contract shows GST at 5% only. The contractor pays 7% PST on the materials that become part of the house and prices it into the quote, so you still bear it, invisibly. Manitoba works the same way with its 7% RST. Saskatchewan is the opposite: GST 5% plus PST 6% on the whole charge, labour included. Ontario is 13% HST on everything, Nova Scotia 14% since 1 April 2025, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%.

Do Toronto downspouts have to be disconnected from the sewer?

Inside the City of Toronto, yes. The City makes downspout disconnection mandatory for all property owners in Toronto, except where it is hazardous or not technically feasible, and cites its Property Standards Bylaw, section 629-20. The City reimburses the labour and materials up to a maximum of C$500 for residential owners whose combined household income is C$50,000 or less and who are a senior aged 65 or older, a senior aged 60 to 64 receiving certain Old Age Security benefits, a person aged 50 or older receiving a registered pension, or a person receiving disability benefits. The income condition is 'or less', so C$50,000 exactly qualifies and C$50,001 does not. The rule and the aid are the City of Toronto's; they do not apply in Mississauga, Brampton or the rest of the GTA.

Why does this calculator not price heat cable for ice dams?

Because the only Canadian per-foot installed heat cable figure located for this build was one Hamilton contractor's page from 2024, which is a single source and was not retrieved. Rather than put a number with one weak source behind it next to better-sourced lines, the calculator leaves heat cable out and says so.
