What a New Garage Door Costs in Canada — Door, Installation and Your Province's Sales Tax

Pick single or double and a material, and see the door and its installation priced separately in Canadian dollars, then what the province does to the invoice: 13% HST in Ontario, 5% GST in Alberta, 11% in Saskatchewan, and in British Columbia a 5% invoice with the 7% PST already buried in the installer's price.

Where the band comes from — and who disagrees

Steel, double: door only C$1,200 – C$2,400, installed C$2,000 – C$4,500, from one national Canadian market guide (Green Building Canada, 2026-05-21). The difference is the installation, scaled by ×1.0710 — Job Bank's renovation-trade wage composite for Toronto against the national median. The door itself is not scaled. The Canadian default. A Calgary installer that sells only insulated steel prices it at C$1,499–C$2,099 single and C$2,099–C$3,399 double, inside this band.

A wage differential is not a local price. The labour differential is a Job Bank WAGE ratio, not a local price, and Canada's wage data and Canada's renovation price guides disagree about two major metros. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages 15% above the national median and Vancouver's 3% below it, while Canadian renovation price guides place Montréal below the national average and Vancouver 25% to 40% above it. So in Montréal this calculator's figure is pushed up and in Vancouver down — the opposite of what those guides report — and no provincial or city price level is modelled at all: only the sales tax and this wage ratio change with the address. The wage basket is Job Bank's five-trade renovation composite — Carpenters (NOC 72310), Electricians (except industrial and power system) (NOC 72200), Plumbers (NOC 72300), Painters and decorators (except interior decorators) (NOC 73112), Construction trades helpers and labourers (NOC 75110). It does NOT include roofers, sheet-metal workers or HVAC technicians, so for eavestrough and furnace-humidifier work the differential is a proxy for the installer's labour, not a measurement of it.

  • Prime Garage Doors (Calgary): Insulated steel R-12–R-16, removal included, C$2,099 – C$3,399
  • Amigo Door (Ottawa): Double-car (16 ft), installed, C$2,200 – C$5,500
  • RenoQuotes (National): Double door, installed, C$4,000 – C$10,000

Opener cross-check: Amigo Door (Ottawa) prices this opener at C$500 – C$900 installed, above the national guide. Both are shown rather than averaged.

What this calculator will not add

Not priced: a building permit (no municipal fee for a like-for-like door replacement was read), oversized or custom openings (the ladder publisher gives no band, only that they can exceed C$15,000 installed), and framing or header repair, which nobody can see until the old door is off.

Every figure is in Canadian dollars. The headline is before tax; the tax line follows the province the house is in, from government sources. Prices are dated Canadian commercial market sources — no Canadian government body publishes an installed garage door price. Estimate only; get written quotes.

Door only and installed, in C$

The table is one Canadian market guide's, read on one date, and it is the only one found that prints both the door-only price and the installed price for every material and both sizes. The gap between the two columns is the installation — the only part of the job this calculator moves with local wages. These are commercial market figures: no Canadian government body publishes an installed garage door price.

What the province adds to the invoice

A supply-and-install garage door is work on real property, so the tax follows the province the house is in. These are the rates every Canadian renovation calculator on this site shares, each read at a government source except where marked.

A worked example: double steel door in Toronto

Double steel door, belt-drive opener, removal included. The door is C$1,200–C$2,400. The installation is the table's C$800–C$2,100 gap times Job Bank's Toronto wage ratio of 1.0710, or C$856.79–C$2,249.07. The belt opener's C$350–C$600 times the damped Toronto multiplier of 1.0426 is C$364.91–C$625.55. That is C$2,421.70–C$5,274.62 before tax; Ontario's 13% HST brings it to C$2,736.52–C$5,960.32.

A wage ratio is not a local price. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages above the national median and Vancouver's below it, the opposite of what Canadian price guides report, and no provincial price level is modelled.

What this calculator refuses to add

Not priced: a building permit (no municipal fee for a like-for-like door replacement was read), oversized or custom openings (the ladder publisher gives no band, only that they can exceed C$15,000 installed), and framing or header repair, which nobody can see until the old door is off.

Sources

Every source is Canadian. No US dataset or price has been converted or used as a proxy, and no exchange rate appears in this route's code. Labour differentials are Job Bank's 2025 wage file (revised 2025-11-19); provincial tax rules are the government sources recorded in this site's Canadian renovation tax table. Estimate only.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new garage door cost in Canada?

Green Building Canada's 2026 guide, dated 21 May 2026, prices a steel garage door at C$1,200 to C$2,500 installed for a single and C$2,000 to C$4,500 for a double. Aluminum runs C$2,000 to C$3,500 single and C$3,500 to C$6,000 double, and solid wood C$3,500 to C$7,000 single and C$6,000 to C$12,000 double. Those are Canadian dollars before GST, HST or PST, and before an opener. Installers price the same job differently: a Calgary installer prices insulated steel at C$1,499 to C$2,099 single and C$2,099 to C$3,399 double with removal included, and an Ottawa installer prints C$1,500 to C$3,500 single and C$2,200 to C$5,500 double.

What does a double garage door with an opener cost in Toronto?

For a double steel door with a belt-drive opener and removal included, this calculator's low estimate in Toronto is about C$2,422 and its high about C$5,275 before tax. That is the door from the national table, plus the table's installation gap scaled up by about 7% for Job Bank's Toronto wage differential, plus a belt opener scaled up about 4%. Ontario's 13% HST takes the low to about C$2,737 and the high to about C$5,960. The door and opener prices are Canadian market guides, not a Toronto price survey; only sales tax and a wage differential change with the address.

Do I pay PST on a garage door installation in British Columbia?

Not on the invoice. The Province of British Columbia states that services related to real property are not subject to PST, so a supply-and-install garage door contract in BC shows GST at 5% only. The installer pays 7% PST on the door and other goods that become part of the house and prices it into the quote. Manitoba works the same way with its 7% RST. Saskatchewan is the opposite: GST 5% plus PST 6% on the whole charge, labour included. Ontario is 13% HST on everything, Nova Scotia 14%, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%.

How much does a garage door opener cost installed in Canada?

RenoQuotes' national Canadian guide, updated 2 September 2026, prices openers installed at C$250 to C$450 for chain drive, C$350 to C$600 for belt drive, C$400 to C$700 for direct drive, C$500 to C$900 for a wall-mounted jackshaft and C$400 to C$800 for a smart opener with Wi-Fi and camera. An Ottawa installer prices higher: C$400 to C$600 chain, C$500 to C$900 belt and C$700 to C$1,100 wall-mount. All before tax.

Is removing the old garage door included?

Usually. A Calgary installer read for this page includes old door removal and haul-away in every price, and the national guide lists removal and disposal as part of a complete quote. Where an installer bills it separately, a Vaughan, Ontario installer prices disposal of the old door at C$100 to C$300, and an Ottawa installer at C$75 to C$150. Ask before signing so it does not appear as an extra line on the final invoice.
