Rent or Buy a Water Softener in Canada — and What Your City's Hardness Does to the Salt Bill

Ontario providers rent softeners as well as sell them. Enercare publishes both prices for its standard unit — C$30.67 a month or C$2,414 installed, plus HST. On price alone the rent passes the purchase price in month 79, but the rental includes free repairs for the life of the softener and a purchase does not. Your salt bill then depends on your own utility's hardness, which runs from 17.4 mg/L in Greater Victoria to 36 grains per gallon in Kitchener–Waterloo.

Rent or buy — the Canadian question

At C$30.67 a month cumulative rent reaches the C$2,500 midpoint purchase price in month 82 — 6 years 10 months. That is the point where rent paid passes the purchase price. Over 10 years the rent comes to C$3,680 against C$2,500 to buy.

What the rental also buys. The crossover compares prices only. Enercare's rental includes free repairs for the life of the softener and free service calls, and Reliance's includes ongoing repairs, parts and labour; if you buy, repairs and servicing are yours. No Canadian softener repair-cost figure was found, so that risk is not priced here — the rental is buying repair coverage as well as the equipment.

The same test without mixing publishers: Enercare's own standard softener is C$2,414 to buy installed or C$30.67 a month to rent, both plus HST, which crosses in month 79. Both sides are compared before tax. In Ontario both the rental and the installed purchase carry 13% HST, so the crossover month does not move. Salt is left out of the crossover because a renter buys salt too. No provider published a rental escalation, a term or a buyout schedule for softeners.

Your water, and what it costs to soften

Toronto (Lake Ontario): 115.0–122.0 mg/L, average 119.0 (6.7–7.1 gpg) — City of Toronto, 2025 plants and distribution, 119 samples. The average is not above the 200 mg/L level Health Canada calls poor.

Softening 255.5 m³ a year (700 L a day) takes 36.2–82.3 kg of salt (mid case 47.0 kg), or 1.8–4.1 20 kg bags. DERIVED: the Region of Waterloo's 2012 test rig measured 0.8 to 1.7 kg of salt per m³ softening 580 mg/L water to 15 mg/L, and that efficiency is applied to your hardness. At Go Lime's C$5–C$10 per bag that is C$9 – C$41 a year — Go Lime does not state the bag size, so treat the dollars as ESTIMATED. Regeneration also sends 12.5–26.8 m³ of water a year to the drain, not priced here.

Sodium. Softening your average supply to 15 mg/L swaps in about 47.8 mg/L of sodium (two sodium atoms for each calcium — chemistry, not a sourced figure). Health Canada recommends that the kitchen tap bypass the softener.

Where the purchase band comes from

Go Lime (Ontario, 2025-12-16): unit C$800–C$2,500 plus installation C$500–C$1,200, with the installation half scaled by ×1.0000 — Job Bank's renovation-trade wage composite for Toronto against Toronto. The same publisher also states a whole-job total of C$1,800 – C$4,000, which does not equal its own split; both are shown.

A wage differential is not a local price. The labour differential is a Job Bank WAGE ratio, not a local price, and Canada's wage data and Canada's renovation price guides disagree about two major metros. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages 15% above the national median and Vancouver's 3% below it, while Canadian renovation price guides place Montréal below the national average and Vancouver 25% to 40% above it. So in Montréal this calculator's figure is pushed up and in Vancouver down — the opposite of what those guides report — and no provincial or city price level is modelled at all: only the sales tax and this wage ratio change with the address. The wage basket is Job Bank's five-trade renovation composite — Carpenters (NOC 72310), Electricians (except industrial and power system) (NOC 72200), Plumbers (NOC 72300), Painters and decorators (except interior decorators) (NOC 73112), Construction trades helpers and labourers (NOC 75110). It does NOT include roofers, sheet-metal workers or HVAC technicians, so for eavestrough and furnace-humidifier work the differential is a proxy for the installer's labour, not a measurement of it.

Health Canada converts one grain per gallon to 17.1 mg/L and describes supplies above 200 mg/L as poor but tolerated and above 500 mg/L as unacceptable for many domestic purposes. The Region of Waterloo's study treats 85–136 mg/L as sufficient for household use, which is why a softener on Ottawa or Victoria water has almost nothing to do.

Where the salt estimate comes from

The Region of Waterloo and the City of Guelph built a softener test rig and ran nine retail units on 580 mg/L water for a three-person household using 700 litres a day. They measured 0.8 to 1.7 kg of salt per cubic metre softened, 1 kg on average. This calculator turns that into grams of hardness removed per kilogram of salt and applies it to your supply — a derived scaling, labelled as one. The study is from 2012; its salt quantities are physical measurements, and its 2012 dollar costs are not used.

Sales tax in British Columbia and Manitoba

In both provinces the calculator shows the real-property treatment: 5% GST on the invoice, with the installer paying 7% provincial tax on the softener itself and pricing it in. Each province's own guidance taxes goods that do not become part of the house differently.

British Columbia: The Province of British Columbia lists built-in water treatment systems, and water filtration equipment attached to plumbing, among goods that generally become part of real property — the treatment shown here, with 5% GST on the invoice and 7% PST paid by the installer on the unit and already inside the price. Its guidance also says equipment only connected to a building by its water or power supply, and not attached to it, does not become real property, and that for such goods the contractor must charge PST on the goods and on the installation. If your installer treats the softener that way, expect 7% PST on the softener and its installation on top of the 5% GST. Both provincial pages were last updated 27 November 2025 and read 2026-09-25. This calculator does not decide the classification; ask your installer how they will invoice it. Sources: Province of British Columbia, defining real property; Province of British Columbia, contractors charging PST.

Manitoba: Manitoba Finance's own Retail Sales Tax bulletins (Nos. 005 and 008, both revised July 2019, read 2026-09-25) say plumbing systems and components "do not become real property even when installed", and list plumbing systems, fixtures, built-in appliances, hot water heaters and domestic water-system pumps among the goods that stay tangible personal property after installation. For those goods the contractor collects 7% RST on the total contract price, installation included. A water softener is not named in either bulletin. If your installer invoices it as tangible personal property, expect 7% RST on the softener and its installation on top of the 5% GST — the figure shown here is the real-property treatment, with RST inside the unit price. Ask your installer how they will invoice it. Frequently asked questions

How much does a water softener cost to install in Canada?

Go Lime's Ontario guide, dated 16 December 2025, puts the softener unit at C$800 to C$2,500 and installation at C$500 to C$1,200, and separately states a total installed cost of C$1,800 to C$4,000. Enercare publishes C$2,414 installed for a standard softener and C$2,729 with a dechlorinator, both plus HST. Reliance publishes purchase prices from C$2,500 for a 30K-grain unit to C$4,000 for a 60K unit with a chlorine filter, with installation extra: it says installation costs vary with your plumbing setup. All figures are Canadian dollars before tax.

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a water softener in Ontario?

On price alone, buying costs less over a normal service life — but the two are not like for like. Enercare's own figures make the price comparison without mixing publishers: C$30.67 a month to rent its standard softener or C$2,414 to buy it installed, both plus HST, and cumulative rent reaches the purchase price in month 79. Enercare says softeners typically last 10 to 15 years. The rental also buys repair coverage: Enercare's includes free repairs for the life of the softener and free service calls, and Reliance's includes ongoing repairs, parts and labour. If you buy, repairs are yours, and no Canadian softener repair-cost figure was found to price that risk. Outside Ontario, rental payments and a purchase can be taxed differently, so the before-tax comparison may not hold after tax. No provider published a rental escalation, term or buyout schedule for softeners.

How hard is the water in Canadian cities?

It ranges from very soft to very hard. From the utilities' own reports: Greater Victoria median 17.4 mg/L; Ottawa's Britannia plant 21.1 mg/L in 2025; Winnipeg's distribution system averaged about 82 mg/L in 2025; Toronto averaged 119 mg/L in 2025 (115 to 122); Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River source is about 165 mg/L; north Calgary's Bow River supply ran 141 to 200 mg/L across 2025 and south Calgary's Elbow River supply 181 to 274; Regina averaged 208 mg/L in 2024. Kitchener–Waterloo groundwater is published at 17 to 36 grains per gallon, about 290 to 616 mg/L. Health Canada converts one grain per gallon to 17.1 mg/L and describes water above 200 mg/L as poor but tolerated and above 500 mg/L as unacceptable for many domestic purposes.

How much salt does a water softener use?

It depends on your hardness and your softener. The Region of Waterloo and the City of Guelph tested nine retail softeners on 580 mg/L water and measured 0.8 to 1.7 kg of salt per cubic metre softened, 1.0 kg on average, for a three-person household using 700 litres a day. Applying that efficiency to other supplies, the same household would use roughly 36 to 82 kg of salt a year on Toronto water and roughly 100 to 462 kg in Kitchener–Waterloo — about 2 to 4 20-kilogram bags against 5 to 23. That scaling is derived from the Region's measurement rather than published for each city.

Does a water softener add sodium to drinking water?

Yes. A salt-based softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, and Health Canada says sodium ion-exchange softening may introduce undesirably high levels of sodium, recommending that the kitchen tap bypass the softener. By chemistry, removing each 100 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate adds about 46 mg/L of sodium. The City of Calgary also notes that salt-based softeners may not be suitable for people on sodium-reduced diets.
