What a Furnace Humidifier Costs in Canada — Bypass, Fan-Powered or Steam
Health Canada says indoor humidity should sit at 30–50%. Price the three furnace-mounted types in Canadian dollars, with your province's sales tax — and for steam, which model your water calls for and an upper bound on a season's electricity at your province's price.

Your humidifier
Location sets the sales tax, the labour differential and, for steam, the electricity price. All three types mount on an existing forced-air furnace. Pick Steam and its electrical and water inputs appear here; leave conductivity and hardness at 0 to use your city's published figures.

Where the price comes from — and who disagrees
Fan-powered (Aprilaire 700, Honeywell HE300/HE360): C$780–C$1,150 installed, from a Greater Toronto installer's Q2 2026 ladder, scaled by ×1.0000 — Job Bank's renovation-trade wages for Toronto against Toronto, damped by a 60% labour share. An Ottawa installer prints the same type at C$500 – C$750. Adds its own fan across the pad, so it needs no bypass duct. The two installers disagree most here: C$780–C$1,150 in the GTA against C$500–C$750 in Ottawa.
A wage differential is not a local price. The labour differential is a Job Bank WAGE ratio, not a local price, and Canada's wage data and Canada's renovation price guides disagree about two major metros. Job Bank puts Montréal's renovation-trade wages 15% above the national median and Vancouver's 3% below it, while Canadian renovation price guides place Montréal below the national average and Vancouver 25% to 40% above it. So in Montréal this calculator's figure is pushed up and in Vancouver down — the opposite of what those guides report — and no provincial or city price level is modelled at all: only the sales tax and this wage ratio change with the address. The wage basket is Job Bank's five-trade renovation composite — Carpenters (NOC 72310), Electricians (except industrial and power system) (NOC 72200), Plumbers (NOC 72300), Painters and decorators (except interior decorators) (NOC 73112), Construction trades helpers and labourers (NOC 75110). It does NOT include roofers, sheet-metal workers or HVAC technicians, so for eavestrough and furnace-humidifier work the differential is a proxy for the installer's labour, not a measurement of it.
Replacing the furnace too? The GTA installer prices a humidifier added during a furnace or heat pump install at C$400 – C$600 incremental, as one band for all types; it is shown here and not substituted into the estimate. Upkeep: pads at C$30–C$60 a year in the GTA (C$15–C$60 in Ottawa), plus C$5–C$15 of water a season per the Ottawa installer; an annual service call is C$120 in the GTA.
Every figure is in Canadian dollars. Health Canada says indoor relative humidity should be maintained at 30–50%. Prices are dated Canadian installers; no government body publishes one. No humidifier rebate was found, and no electrical permit fee is priced. Estimate only.
The humidifier hangs on the furnace — the Canadian furnace replacement cost calculator prices that by province and climate zone, and the Canadian water softener cost calculator carries municipal hardness figures for a steam unit.

What steam costs to run, province by province
The Greater Toronto installer this page prices from publishes steam use at about 3–5 kWh a day at peak. Over 180 days (ESTIMATED) that is 540–900 kWh — an upper bound, because a season is not all peak days. Each price is Hydro-Québec's 2025 comparison: an AVERAGE price at 1,000 kWh a month, before tax, with fixed charges folded in — an extra kWh can cost more or less than this. Figures below are before tax.
| Province (city priced) | Average ¢/kWh, before tax | Season at peak, upper bound (CAD) |

Canadian water and the steam model
The manufacturer's specification sheet selects the steam model by water conductivity, with hardness as the paired column: the Model 800LC up to 300 µS/cm (about 9 gpg), the Model 800 up to 1,250 µS/cm (36 gpg), and installation not recommended above that. The 800LC will not work with softened water, and at 120 V the sheet recommends the 800LC for any water. Toronto is the case where the two columns disagree: its 2025 hardness averaged 119 mg/L, about 7 gpg (the 800LC row), but its conductivity ran 309–411 µS/cm (the Model 800 row). The table is keyed on conductivity, so at 240 V the calculator points Toronto water to the Model 800 — confirm with the installer. Kitchener–Waterloo's groundwater is published at 17–36 gpg, which reaches the hardness limit. The Canadian water softener cost calculator carries hardness figures for ten Canadian municipal supplies.

Next steps
A humidifier hangs on the furnace, and the cheapest time to add one is when the furnace is replaced — the Canadian furnace replacement cost calculator prices that by province and climate zone. A leaky house loses humidity as fast as it loses heat, so the Canadian attic insulation cost calculator is worth a look too, and the Canadian water heater rent-vs-buy calculator covers the other appliance in the mechanical room.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a whole-house humidifier cost to install in Canada?
A Greater Toronto installer publishes Q2 2026 installed prices of C$520 to C$720 for a bypass humidifier, C$780 to C$1,150 for a fan-powered one and C$1,200 to C$1,650 for steam. An Ottawa installer, writing in February 2026, puts the same three at C$400 to C$600, C$500 to C$750 and C$1,200 to C$2,500. The two agree on the order and disagree most on fan-powered units. Neither states whether tax is included; in Ontario HST of 13% applies. The Toronto installer also prices a humidifier added while a new furnace or heat pump goes in at C$400 to C$600 incremental.
How much electricity does a steam humidifier use?
The Greater Toronto installer this calculator prices from publishes steam use at about 3 to 5 kWh a day at peak. Over a 180-day heating season, which is an estimate, that is 540 to 900 kWh, and because a season is not all peak days it is an upper bound. At Hydro-Québec's 2025 average residential prices before tax — 15.57 cents in Toronto, 8.29 in Montréal and 22.9 in Calgary, each an average at 1,000 kWh a month with fixed charges included — that bound runs from about C$84 at the low end to C$140 at the high end in Toronto; the high end is about C$75 in Montréal and C$206 in Calgary. The Aprilaire 800 specification sheet lists 2.8 kW for its 240-volt, 11.5-amp configuration; if you know your unit's hours at full output, the calculator can use kilowatts times hours instead.
Can I use a steam humidifier with hard water or a water softener?
It depends on the model, the voltage and the water. The Aprilaire 800 specification sheet selects the model by conductivity, with hardness as the paired column: the Model 800LC up to 300 µS/cm (about 9 grains per gallon), the Model 800 up to 1,250 µS/cm (36 grains per gallon), and installation not recommended above that. It states the 800LC will not work with softened water, and that at 120 volts the 800LC is recommended regardless of water quality. Toronto shows why conductivity matters: the City's 2025 report puts hardness at about 7 grains per gallon but conductivity at 309 to 411 µS/cm, which is the Model 800 row. Kitchener–Waterloo's groundwater is published at 17 to 36 grains per gallon, which reaches the limit.
What humidity should a Canadian house be kept at in winter?
Health Canada says indoor relative humidity should be maintained at 30 to 50 per cent. That is a range with a ceiling as well as a floor, so a humidifier is set to a target inside it rather than as high as it will go.
What does a furnace humidifier cost to maintain?
For bypass and fan-powered units, the Toronto installer puts evaporator pads at C$30 to C$60 a year; the Ottawa installer prices a pad at C$15 to C$30, replaced once or twice a season, plus C$5 to C$15 of water a season. For steam, the Toronto installer puts a replacement canister at C$60 to C$120 every one to three years, which is C$20 to C$120 a year, on top of the electricity. An annual service call is C$120 in the Toronto installer's price list.
