“How much do gutters cost” is the wrong first question. The number that actually drives price is linear feet, and linear feet comes from your roofline, not your square footage. Here is how to get from house size to a real feet-and-dollars estimate.
A 1,500 sq ft single-story home typically needs 150 to 200 linear feet of gutter, per industry sizing guidance. Installed on a typical ~200-foot run, that runs $1,000–$6,000 depending on material — from $1,000–$2,000 for vinyl up to $3,000–$10,000 for copper. How much gutter your house needs
Gutter length follows the roof's edge — its perimeter — not the interior floor area. That is why sizing guides give ranges by home size rather than a fixed formula: a compact square footprint has a short, continuous roofline, while the same square footage with gables, a bump-out, an attached garage, or an L-shaped plan needs meaningfully more gutter.

How many downspouts you need
Downspout count follows gutter length and roof drainage area, not house size directly. This Old House's sizing guidance puts a run of 60 feet or longer at a minimum of two outlets, and a common installer rule of thumb spaces downspouts every 20 to 40 feet of gutter so water keeps moving instead of overflowing at the low point of a run.
Worked example
A 1,500 sq ft single-story home with ~180 linear feet of gutter, spaced at one downspout per 35 feet, needs roughly 5 downspouts. A simple rectangular footprint might get away with 4 spaced at the corners; a home with more roof valleys or a longer run on one side may need 6. Downspout sizing is also checked against roof area — roughly 1 square inch of downspout cross-section for every 100 square feet of roof, per the same guidance — which is why a steep, complex roof sometimes needs oversized downspouts even on a modest-length gutter run.
