What moves the number
- Thickness and material — Thin mats for cardio cost least; thicker rubber rated for free weights and dropped equipment costs more, and adds real weight across a large room.

Rubber gym flooring is a genuinely easy install by flooring standards — but the material decision you make before you buy anything matters more here than the installation itself. The two systems, interlocking tiles and glue-down rolls or tiles, aren't just two ways to get to the same floor. They have different subfloor requirements, different tools, and different answers to the one question that actually determines which you need: what's going on top of it.
Weight is the plain-numbers version of that question. REGUPOL's own product specification rates its 1/4-inch rolled rubber at 1.35 lb/ft² and its 3/8-inch rubber at 2.0 lb/ft² — real dead load across a full room, and worth knowing before you assume "thicker is just better." A thicker floor also does real work: Ecore's Fit Collection is tested to ASTM F970 for static load resistance, holding indentation under 400 psi to less than 0.005 inch at 8mm thickness — a concrete number for what "rated for heavy equipment" actually means, rather than a marketing phrase.
Interlocking or glue-down is the second decision, and it's not just about ease of installation. REGUPOL's own instructions for its no-adhesive aktivlok tiles ask for a subfloor flat to within 1/8 inch over a 10-foot radius — tighter than the 3/16-inch-in-10-feet tolerance the same manufacturer allows for its glue-down aktivpro system. That's the opposite of what most people assume going in: a floating interlocking floor is less forgiving of an uneven subfloor than a glued-down one, because nothing is bonding the tiles down to smooth out small irregularities.
Glue-down is also where this stops being a one-afternoon project. If you might move or take the floor with you, or you want to start using the space the same day, interlocking is the simpler path — no adhesive, no cure time. If the room is a permanent home gym with heavier or more continuous use, glue-down holds up better over time and shows fewer seams across a large area.

Test and prep the subfloor

Confirm your subfloor is flat enough for your chosen system — and, for glue-down, test its moisture and pH before adhesive goes anywhere near it.
For interlocking tiles, REGUPOL's own installation instructions call for the subfloor to be flat within 1/8 inch over a 10-foot radius. For glue-down, the tolerance is looser — 3/16 inch in 10 feet per the same manufacturer's aktivpro instructions — but the testing requirement is heavier: concrete must meet a maximum moisture vapor emission of 5.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours by the calcium chloride test (ASTM F1869), or a maximum 85% relative humidity by the in-situ probe method (ASTM F2170). A pH test is also required, and anything above pH 9 must be neutralized before you proceed.
Sweep and vacuum thoroughly either way — grit under a floating tile telegraphs through as a bump, and grit under a glued tile is a void in the bond.

Acclimate the material

Let tiles or rolls (and adhesive, for glue-down) sit at room temperature for the manufacturer's stated window before you start.
REGUPOL's aktivlok interlocking tiles need a minimum 24 hours at a uniform 68°F before installation. The aktivpro glue-down system asks for 48 hours at 65°F for both the tiles and the adhesive, maintained before, during and after the install. Treat these as different products with different windows rather than assuming one number covers both.

Plan your layout from the center out

This keeps cut pieces at the walls consistent on both sides — and leave the expansion gap the manufacturer specifies at the perimeter.
Snap perpendicular chalk lines through the center of the room and work outward toward the walls in each direction, so any cut pieces land symmetrically on opposite sides rather than as one full row and one sliver. Both REGUPOL systems specify a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter for expansion and contraction — do not compression-fit the last piece against the wall, per the manufacturer's own instructions for both aktivlok and aktivpro.

Puzzle-piece edges snap together for interlocking; glue-down needs the specified adhesive, trowel and open-time window.
For interlocking, work row by row from the center, tapping tabs together (a rubber mallet speeds this up over pressing by hand). For glue-down, REGUPOL's own instructions specify their PU350 one-part polyurethane adhesive, spread with a 1/16-inch square-notch trowel at a coverage rate of 95 sq ft per gallon. Spread only as much adhesive as you can cover with flooring inside its 40–60 minute open time — going too fast leaves adhesive uncovered past its window, too slow means setting tile into adhesive that's already skinning over.
Lay tiles into the wet adhesive without squeezing it up through the joints, and weigh down any raised seam with a concrete utility block until the adhesive sets. If a joint gaps, hold it with tape (not duct tape, which can leave residue) rather than adhesive alone.

Cut edge pieces to fit

Use a utility knife with a fresh blade for clean cuts along the walls, and don't compress the final piece against it.
Measure and mark each edge piece individually rather than assuming the wall is perfectly straight — most aren't. Cut against a metal straightedge for a clean line, and stop 1/4 inch short of the wall for the expansion gap both REGUPOL systems specify.

Common mistakes
Skipping the moisture and pH test before a glue-down install
Why it happens
The slab looks and feels dry, and a moisture test feels like an extra step on a project that's supposed to be simple.
The fix
Test anyway — REGUPOL's own instructions cap moisture emission at 5.5 lb/1,000 sq ft/24 hr (ASTM F1869) or 85% RH (ASTM F2170), and require neutralizing any pH above 9. A slab that fails either test needs to be addressed before adhesive goes down, not after the floor is bubbling.
Compression-fitting the last row against the wall
Why it happens
It looks tidier with no gap, and cutting a piece slightly long feels like it uses material more efficiently.
The fix
Leave the 1/4-inch expansion gap both REGUPOL systems specify. Rubber flooring expands and contracts with temperature, and a tight fit is what causes buckling at the perimeter later.
Using a generic adhesive instead of the system's specified one
Why it happens
Any construction adhesive looks similar in the tube, and it's tempting to grab what's already on the shelf.
The fix
Use the adhesive the flooring manufacturer specifies, at the trowel notch and coverage rate they call for — REGUPOL's own PU350 is rated for a 1/16-inch notch at 95 sq ft per gallon, and a substitute adhesive changes both the open time and the bond.
Not weighing thickness against the room's actual dead load
Why it happens
Thicker flooring feels like the safer, more "heavy duty" choice by default.
The fix
Check the real numbers before covering a large room — 3/8-inch rubber runs about 2.0 lb/ft² versus roughly 1.35 lb/ft² at 1/4 inch, per REGUPOL's own specification. That's a meaningful difference in total dead load across a full basement or garage floor.
Installing before the material has acclimated
Why it happens
The tiles or rolls look and feel ready straight out of the box, and waiting a full day or two feels unnecessary.
The fix
Hold to the manufacturer's stated window — 24 hours at 68°F for aktivlok, 48 hours at 65°F for aktivpro tiles and adhesive alike — since seam fit and adhesive bond both depend on the material being at the installation temperature first.
After the job: care and maintenance
First 24 hours after a glue-down install
Keep heavy equipment off the floor while the adhesive develops its initial set, per the adhesive manufacturer's instructions — full cure can take longer than the point it's safe to walk on.
Ongoing cleaning
Damp-mop with a neutral or low-pH detergent; don't flood the floor with water. Both REGUPOL systems are explicit that the rubber is permeable and will pass water through to the subfloor beneath.
Periodically
Check interlocking seams for gapping and re-seat any tabs that have separated. Confirm the 1/4-inch perimeter gap hasn't been compressed by furniture or equipment that's crept toward the wall.
If you move heavy equipment across the floor
Use rigid sheeting to disperse the load rather than rolling it directly across interlocking tiles, which are a free-floating system and not designed to be a rolling-load surface.
