Every figure on this page is an installed price — material and labour together. Labour to fit vinyl plank runs $1–$5 per square foot, so at any given grade the material is roughly the installed figure less that. Click-lock planks sit at the cheaper end of the labour range than glue-down, though the planks themselves cost slightly more.

The material column is arithmetic, not a published figure: it is the installed range less the bottom of the labour range, which is what a DIY click-lock install realistically saves. Treat it as the ceiling on your saving rather than a quote. Deduct the full $5 and you are assuming a professional-grade result on a glue-down floor first time.
Four costs sit outside both columns and are quoted separately: moving furniture at $25–$75 per room, subfloor replacement at $2.2–$4.75 per sq ft, baseboards at $5.5–$11 per piece, and radiant floor heating at $7–$17 per sq ft.

Wear layer & core, explained
Wear layer (mils): the clear top coat that resists scratches. 12 mil suits light residential; 20 mil handles kids and pets; 28 mil+ is commercial-grade. This is the single best predictor of how long the floor lasts.
Rigid core (SPC vs WPC): SPC (stone-plastic) is denser, more dent-resistant, and best over imperfect subfloors; WPC (wood-plastic) is softer and warmer underfoot. Both are 100% waterproof.
Thickness & underlayment: thicker planks (6–8 mm) feel more solid and quiet; an attached pad saves a step.
Subfloor prep & DIY vs. pro
LVP is forgiving but not magic — the subfloor must be clean, dry, and flat within about 3/16" over 10 ft, or planks will flex and click apart. Floating click-lock LVP is one of the most DIY-friendly floors and can save the $2–$4/sq ft labor, but pros are worth it for large areas, lots of cuts, or an out-of-level subfloor. Acclimate the planks in the room for 48 hours first.

Unlike material, LVP labor in this calculator does not change with grade or core type — it is a single sourced band of $1–$5 per sq ft, drawn from installer-rate data on the site's own flooring cost dataset, applied on top of whatever material and core surcharges the plank selection adds.
Core type is a material surcharge here, not a labor one: choosing SPC (stone-polymer) core adds $0.30/sq ft and WPC (wood-polymer) core adds $0.50/sq ft to the base grade rate, before labor is added on top.

SPC vs WPC LVP — which is better?+
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) is denser, harder, and more dimensionally stable — it handles temperature extremes better and is better for commercial use or areas with temperature swings. WPC (Wood Polymer Composite) is softer and warmer underfoot with built-in foam underlayment, making it more comfortable in living areas. For most homes, SPC is the better choice for durability; WPC is preferred where comfort is the priority.
What wear layer thickness do I need?+
12 mil (0.3mm) is the residential standard — appropriate for most bedrooms, living rooms, and dining areas. Upgrade to 20 mil (0.5mm) for high-traffic areas, homes with pets, or heavy furniture. 28 mil+ (0.7mm+) is commercial grade — warranted for 25+ years and appropriate for the most demanding residential use.
