What moves the number
- Laminate vs. SPC vs. flexible LVP — Laminate is typically the least expensive per square foot; rigid SPC costs more but tolerates damper rooms; flexible vinyl plank sits between the two and forgives a slightly less-than-perfect subfloor.
- Subfloor remediation — Leveling compound and grinding to hit a manufacturer's flatness tolerance can add real cost on an older subfloor — this is rarely optional once you've actually measured it.

Before you start
"Click-lock" describes a locking mechanism, not one product — it covers laminate (a wood-fiber core under a printed wear layer), LVP and SPC (a stone- or wood-plastic composite core), and standalone vinyl plank, and the three do not share one installation spec. The most consequential difference for a first-time installer is acclimation: Mohawk's laminate and Pergo's laminate line both require unopened cartons to sit flat in the install room for 48 hours before you touch them, while Shaw's and COREtec's rigid SPC lines explicitly do not require acclimation at all, because the composite core is dimensionally stable across the normal range of household temperature and humidity. Skipping a laminate manufacturer's acclimation window is one of the few mistakes on this project that can't be fixed after the fact — the boards expand or contract once installed instead of before.
The second decision that matters before you buy anything is the expansion gap, and it is not one universal number. Mohawk's laminate calls for 8-10mm (5/16"-3/8") around the perimeter and every fixed object; Pergo Pro specifies 3/8" flat; Shaw's SPC line and LifeProof's vinyl plank both call for 1/4" under normal room sizes, widening to 1/2" once a room exceeds 2,500 square feet. All of them agree on the underlying reason — this floor is not fastened down, so it moves with temperature and humidity, and the gap is what keeps that movement from having anywhere to go but up. Use the number printed for the product in your box, not a rule of thumb from a different flooring type.
Subfloor flatness is where more installs fail than any locking mechanism. LifeProof and Shaw both specify flatness within 1/4" or 3/16" over a 10-foot span (the exact figure varies slightly by product); Mohawk's laminate is stricter still, at 2mm (about 1/16") over one meter. A subfloor that's out of tolerance doesn't stop the boards from clicking together — it just means the floor doesn't sit flat once they do, and every manufacturer here treats grinding high spots and filling low spots with leveling compound as mandatory prep, not an optional step for a fussy installer.
Finally, decide what's underneath the flooring before you order anything. Some click-lock products, particularly rigid SPC and vinyl plank, ship with underlayment already attached to the plank; laminate almost never does. Installing a second underlayment under a product that already has one is allowed by Shaw's guidelines only up to a 3mm thickness, and stacking two full underlayment systems is a common way to make a floating floor feel spongy or to compromise the locking mechanism's grip.

Let flooring acclimate
48–72 hours
Leave boxes in the room for 48-72 hours before installing so the material adjusts to room temperature and humidity.
This step applies squarely to laminate and is often skippable for rigid SPC. Mohawk's laminate instructions call for 48 hours lying flat, unopened, in the middle of the room at normal room temperature; Pergo Pro's manual sets the same 48-hour minimum but also caps the swing allowed if you can't wait — no more than a 25°F or 20% relative-humidity difference between the truck and the room. Shaw's SPC guidelines and COREtec's installation guide both state plainly that acclimatization is not required for their floating rigid-core products, so check which category your box falls into before you plan the schedule; treating an SPC product as if it needs the laminate wait costs you two days for nothing, and skipping a laminate product's wait risks the opposite problem after it's down.

Prep the subfloor

Must be clean, dry, and flat — fill any low spots and sand high spots.
Flatness tolerances differ slightly by brand but land in the same neighborhood: LifeProof and Shaw both specify roughly 1/4" (or 3/16") of variance over a 10-foot span; Mohawk's laminate is tighter, at 2mm over one meter. Check with a straightedge, not by eye — a floor that looks flat can still be out of tolerance, and every manufacturer here treats this check as mandatory rather than optional.
On concrete, moisture is a separate test from flatness. Shaw's guidelines set a maximum of 8 lbs. per 1,000 sq ft in 24 hours by the calcium chloride test (ASTM F1869) or 90% relative humidity by the in-situ probe test (ASTM F2170), and note that a floor covering installer is responsible for confirming those tests were done and passed even when someone else performs them. Skipping this step on a slab with a history of dampness is one of the few subfloor problems flooring alone can't compensate for.
If you're installing over old resilient flooring, ceramic tile, or another hard surface, check each manufacturer's rules before you assume it's fine to float over: LifeProof allows old flat ceramic tile with grout joints filled if wider than 1/4", but excludes carpet and more than one layer of existing sheet vinyl. Never sand, dry-sweep, or grind old resilient flooring or its backing to prep it — older sheet vinyl and cutback adhesive can contain asbestos, and disturbing it dry is how fibers become airborne.
Check your workA straightedge across the floor in several directions shows no gap exceeding your product's tolerance, and — on concrete — a moisture test has actually been performed and passed, not just assumed.

Roll out underlayment

Many click-lock products come with attached underlayment; otherwise roll out a separate moisture barrier.
If your product doesn't already have underlayment attached, run it perpendicular or parallel to the flooring per the manufacturer's instructions (Shaw specifies parallel to the starting wall, overlapping each course at least 4 inches, with seams taped over concrete but not taped over wood). If your product does have underlayment attached and you still want a second layer for sound or comfort, Shaw's guidelines cap that second layer at 3mm — thicker than that risks the click joints not seating fully.

Leave a 1/4-1/2 inch expansion gap around the perimeter — the flooring will shift slightly with temperature/humidity.
Use the exact gap your product specifies rather than a rule of thumb: Shaw's SPC line and LifeProof both call for 1/4" under 2,500 sq ft (1/2" above that), while Mohawk's laminate wants 8-10mm and Pergo Pro wants a flat 3/8". Spacers held against the wall are the reliable way to hold that gap consistently across the whole first row — eyeballing it is the single most common source of an uneven perimeter gap.
Check your workSpacers sit at every few feet along the starting wall, and the gap measures the same distance the whole run rather than tapering.

Stagger seams between rows by at least 6 inches for a natural look and structural stability.
Work left to right, and keep checking the first two rows for square — they set the reference line for everything after them. Maintain the same perimeter expansion gap around every fixed obstacle, not just the outer walls: door jambs, pipes, and permanently installed cabinets all need the same clearance the walls do, per every manufacturer here.
Check your workEach new plank seats fully with no visible ridge at the seam, and end joints are staggered at least 6 inches from the row before and after.

Install transition strips and baseboard/quarter round

This covers the expansion gap and finishes the edges.
Trim and baseboard should be fastened to the wall or the existing baseboard, never down through the flooring into the subfloor — every manufacturer here is explicit that nothing should pin the floor to the subfloor at the perimeter, since that's exactly the movement the expansion gap exists to allow. In a wet area like a bathroom, run a bead of silicone caulk along the perimeter gap instead of leaving it open to standing water.

Common mistakes
Skipping acclimation because the flooring looks fine in the box
Why it happens
The boards feel rigid and dry, so 48 hours of waiting seems like an unnecessary delay before starting the fun part.
The fix
Check whether your specific product requires it — laminate almost always does (48 hours per Mohawk and Pergo), rigid SPC often doesn't (Shaw and COREtec both waive it). Follow the manual for the box you're holding, not a general rule.
Eyeballing the expansion gap instead of using spacers
Why it happens
A consistent gap looks like it should be easy to judge by eye, especially along a long, straight wall.
The fix
Use spacers matched to your product's specified gap (1/4" to 3/8" depending on brand and room size) at regular intervals along every wall and fixed obstacle. A gap that closes anywhere in the room is what causes peaking and buckling later, and it's far cheaper to catch with a spacer now than to fix once the floor is down.
Assuming a floor that looks flat is within tolerance
Why it happens
Subfloor dips and humps are often too subtle to see, especially under existing carpet padding or old flooring.
The fix
Check with an actual straightedge against the manufacturer's number — 1/4" in 10 feet for LifeProof and Shaw's SPC line, 2mm per meter for Mohawk's laminate. Fill low spots and sand high spots until the floor passes, rather than hoping the click-lock system will bridge the gap.
Fastening trim or baseboard through the flooring into the subfloor
Why it happens
Nailing trim straight down feels more solid than fastening it to the wall alone.
The fix
Fasten transition strips and baseboard to the wall or existing baseboard only. Pinning a floating floor to the subfloor at the perimeter defeats the expansion gap and is a common, avoidable cause of buckling.
Grinding or sanding old resilient flooring to flatten it before installing new flooring over it
Why it happens
It's the fastest way to knock down a lippy seam or ridge in old vinyl or tile.
The fix
Don't. Older sheet vinyl, tile, and cutback adhesive can contain asbestos, and dry mechanical removal is exactly the process that releases fibers. Use a cementitious patching compound instead, or have the material tested first.
After the job: care and maintenance
First few weeks
Watch the perimeter gap where trim doesn't yet cover it — confirm nothing has been pushed against it (furniture feet, a rug pad) that could close it off.
Ongoing
Wipe up standing water promptly at seams, especially on laminate, where a swollen edge from repeated moisture exposure isn't reversible.
Seasonally
A floating floor moves slightly with humidity swings; a small gap opening or closing at a doorway transition is normal and is exactly what the expansion joint is designed to absorb.
If you ever add cabinets or an island
Rigid SPC and vinyl plank are generally not meant to have fixed cabinetry sitting directly on the floating floor — check your product's manual before building anything permanent on top of it.
