The charger is the cheap part. What decides your quote is whether your electrical panel has room for the load and how far the unit sits from it — and one of those two can be settled by a code rule most homeowners never hear about.

Why that breaker size

The National Electrical Code treats EV charging as a continuous load (NFPA 70 2023, Article 625.42), and a continuous load may occupy no more than 80% of its branch circuit. A 40 A charger therefore needs 40 ÷ 0.8 = 50 A of circuit, rounded up to the next standard breaker — 50 A. That is why a 40-amp charger is sold with a 50-amp circuit requirement, and it is a code rule, not an estimate.

You may not need the panel upgrade you were quoted

A $1,500 – $3,000 service upgrade can more than double an EV charger project, and it is the line most likely to appear on a quote without being genuinely necessary. There are two provisions in the National Electrical Code that frequently make it avoidable, and both of them are things you have to ask about — an installer who defaults to the simplest path will not raise them for you.

1. A load calculation from your real metered demand (NEC 220.87)

The conservative way to size a service assumes every circuit in the house could draw at once. NEC 220.87 permits a different method: take twelve months of your actual metered demand, use the highest recorded interval, and size from that. Real houses use far less than their worst case, so this routinely clears an existing 100-amp or 150-amp service that a nameplate calculation would have condemned. It costs an electrician's visit and your utility's usage history.

2. Letting a load-management system cap the charger (NEC 625.42(A))

Article 625.42 of the 2023 NEC states plainly that EV charging is a continuous load — but 625.42(A) adds that where an energy management system provides load management, “the maximum equipment load on a service and feeder shall be the maximum load permitted by the EMS.” In plain terms: a device that throttles or pauses the charger when the rest of the house is drawing hard means the service only has to be sized for the managed figure, not the charger's nameplate. That is often the difference between needing an upgrade and not.

What we deliberately do not publish

We do not price the load-management device. The route is real and it is in the code, but the only 2026 price points we could find for the common hardware were Canadian retail listings in Canadian dollars, and converting a foreign retail price into a US installed cost would be inventing a number, not sourcing one. So the estimator names it as an unpriced option and tells you to get it quoted. The same applies to trenching to a detached garage: Qmerit says it “significantly increases” labor and materials and publishes no figure, so neither do we.

Why a 40-amp charger needs a 50-amp circuit

Because the NEC classes EV charging as a continuous load, and a continuous load may occupy no more than 80% of the circuit feeding it. Divide the charger's continuous current by 0.8 and round up to the next standard breaker. This is the reason a bigger charger is not simply a bigger purchase — it is a bigger circuit, and past a point, a panel that cannot supply one.

NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), 2023 edition, Article 625.42. Power is amps × 240 V. Wire gauge is deliberately omitted — it depends on run length, conduit fill, ambient temperature and conductor material, and is the installer's call, not an estimate.

The federal credit is gone — and the date matters more than you think

Section 30C, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, was the one federal incentive that covered home charging equipment. Under Public Law 119-21 it does not apply to property placed in service after June 30, 2026. That deadline has passed, so a charger energised today earns no federal credit, and any cost guide still showing you a 30% offset is out of date.

The detail that caught people out: the test was placed in service, not purchased. Buying the unit in June and having the electrician finish in July did not preserve the credit. And even before it expired, the credit only reached property in a low-income or non-urban census tract — a restriction that already excluded a large share of suburban addresses.

The install is one-time. The electricity is not.

Everything above is the capital cost of getting a 240-volt circuit to your driveway. What follows it is a permanent increase in your household electricity draw — a car charged at home is usually the largest single load a house adds, and whether that is cheap depends entirely on your rate structure and whether you can shift it to off-peak hours. The install decision and the running-cost decision are not the same decision, and people routinely make the first without checking the second.

Why does a 40-amp EV charger need a 50-amp breaker?+

Divide the charger's continuous current by 0.8 and round up to the next standard breaker: a 32-amp charger needs a 40-amp circuit, a 40-amp charger needs 50 amps, and a 48-amp charger needs 60 amps. This is a code rule rather than a cost estimate, which is why the circuit size is not something an installer can negotiate down to save you money.

Is there still a federal tax credit for a home EV charger in 2026?+

No. The Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026 under Public Law 119-21, so a charger energised today earns nothing federally. The test was placed-in-service, not purchased — buying the unit before the deadline did not preserve the credit if the electrician finished after it. That is labor of $450 to $900 plus $200 to $500 of conduit, wire and breaker, and nothing else. It is the genuine floor for the work, and it is what many people are actually asking about when their car came with a charger in the box.

Methodology

The estimator adds its lines in this order: hardware + (labor + materials) × run factor + outdoor weatherproofing + panel upgrade + permit. The run factor is applied only to labor and materials, because distance moves electrician hours and the quantity of wire and conduit and nothing else — not the price of the unit, and not a fixed municipal fee. Every band is read at build time from our own cost dataset (ev-charger-installation, last verified 2026-08-20), so the tables on this page and the numbers the estimator produces come from one place and cannot drift apart.

Three figures here are ESTIMATED rather than sourced, and we would rather name them than bury them. First, the three hardware tiers are our partition of Qmerit's single published $300–$900 band; the endpoints are theirs, the boundaries inside are ours. Second, the labor line of $450 – $900 is Qmerit's combined “labor & permitting” line of $500–$1,200 with Qmerit's own permit figures subtracted ($500 − $50 = $450; $1,200 − $300 = $900), so that permit could become a user input without being counted twice — select the standard permit and the two lines add back to exactly $500–$1,200. Third, the run-length factors (1.00 / 1.15 / 1.35 / 1.70) and the $100–$300 outdoor weatherproofing line are ours: Qmerit names distance and mounting as cost drivers but publishes no per-foot rate and no weatherproofing figure, and no US source worth citing does either. Those are the softest numbers on the page.

Worked example, so you can check us. A standard 40-amp unit, an 11–25 ft run, an attached garage, a panel with spare capacity and a standard permit gives a low of $450 + ($450 + $200) × 1.15 + $50 = $1,247.50 and a high of $700 + ($900 + $500) × 1.15 + $300 = $2,610. At the base case — the same job with a run of 10 ft or less — the model returns $1,150$2,400, which sits inside Qmerit's published $749–$2,500 installed total. It is not calibrated to land there; it lands there because every component came from that one source. The same math checks out at both ends of the range: the floor case (installation only, no adverse factors) runs $650 – $1,400, and the ceiling case (everything adverse at once — long run, no spare panel capacity, outdoor weatherproofing) runs $3,705 – $7,380.
