Closet Remodel Cost Calculator

A closet remodel can cost about $150 or several thousand dollars. The difference is the system you put in. An 8 ft reach-in with a wire kit you hang yourself is about $114 to $185. The same closet with an installed laminate system is $1,000 to $1,200. Price your own closet below.

The short answer

Closet systems are priced by the linear foot: the length of wall the shelves and rods cover, measured along the floor. A wire kit is about $14.24–$23.17 per foot. A custom built-in is $150–$450 per foot. Extras like drawers, lights and an island are added on top.

In plain English: measure your closet walls, pick how fancy you want it, and multiply. A kit you put up yourself costs hundreds. A system someone designs and installs costs about a thousand dollars and up. A walk-in with a custom system and extras can cost many thousands.

Worked example 1: an 8 ft reach-in

Say your bedroom closet is 8 feet wide and has one rod and one shelf. You want a mid-range laminate system with shelves, double rods and a tower, designed and installed for you. These are the calculator's default settings.

  • Mid-range installed systems cost $125 to $150 per linear foot (Fixr and Angi).
  • 8 feet × $125 = $1,000. 8 feet × $150 = $1,200.
  • The middle of that range is $1,100. That is our own midpoint, not a figure any publisher printed.
  • About 42.5% of it, or $468, is labor.
  • The same closet with a wire kit you put up yourself: $114 to $185.

Worked example 2: a 7 × 10 ft walk-in

A walk-in that is 10 feet across the back and 7 feet deep has 10 + 7 + 7 = 24 linear feet of wall. You want a standard custom system (laminate or melamine finish), LED lights, four drawers and an island. An island is a free-standing chest of drawers in the middle of the closet.

  • Full custom built-in, 24 linear ft, installed: $3,600 to $10,800
  • Corner units for a walk-in (2): $100 to $400
  • LED strip or puck lights: $200 to $800
  • Drawers (4): $300 to $800
  • Island with drawers: $1,000 to $2,500
  • Total: $5,200 to $15,300, with $10,250 as the midpoint.

The calculator's formula, now that you have seen it work:

price = linear feet × price per foot for your tier
+ install labor (kits, if you hire it out)
+ 2 corner units (walk-ins with an installed system)
+ each extra you pick

Reach-in or walk-in?

A reach-in closet is the usual bedroom closet. It is about 2 feet deep with doors across the front, and you reach in from the room. A walk-in is a small room you step into, with storage on two or three walls.

Walk-ins cost more mostly because they have more wall. A 2 × 6 ft reach-in has about 10 linear feet; a 7 × 10 ft walk-in has 24. An installed system that turns a corner also needs corner units. The calculator adds two at Fixr's installed shelving price of $50–$200 each, on the mid-range and custom tiers only. Published whole-closet ranges show the gap: HomeGuide puts a reach-in at $500–$3,800 and a walk-in at $1,000–$8,000.

The four kinds of closet system

Mid-range installed systeme.g. Local closet installersA laminate system designed to your measurements and installed for you.$125–$150installedA closet installerLong; laminate wipes clean
Full custom built-ine.g. California Closets-type companiesFloor-to-ceiling cabinets, drawers and shelving built to fit, often with lighting.$150–$450installedA custom closet companyAs long as the house; like built-in furniture

Brand names are examples of a tier, not endorsements. California Closets publishes no price list; its tier is shown only through Fixr's and Bob Vila's third-party $175–$350 per linear foot. A hired installer adds $21.67–$33.48 per foot to the two kit tiers (Homewyse, May 2026). So a hired-in Elfa-type kit can cost as much as a mid-range installed system: at 8 linear feet its high end is about $1,318, against $1,200.

Wire, laminate or wood?

Wire shelving is coated steel. It is cheap, lets air through and is easy to put up, but small things fall through and shelves can sag. Laminate and melamine are a tough plastic surface on board made from wood chips. They look like furniture and wipe clean. MDF is a smooth board that is usually painted. Solid wood such as cedar costs the most and smells fresh.

What drives the cost

  • Linear feet. Every foot of wall you fill costs the same again.
  • The tier. A custom built-in can cost ten times a wire kit for the same wall.
  • Drawers and doors on units. Drawers are $75–$200 each (Fixr; Bob Vila prints $80–$200). Open shelves and rods are the cheapest storage.
  • Lighting. LED strip and puck lights are $200–$800 (Angi). Puck lights are small round lights stuck under a shelf. A new ceiling light with new wiring needs an electrician and costs $800–$2,000 (Fixr; HomeAdvisor prints $800–$1,000).
  • Doors. New closet doors use this site's interior-door band of $226–$824 per door. Bifold, sliding and mirrored doors are priced in detail on the door installation calculator.
  • Clearing out the old closet. Angi prints demolition at $200–$600 and removing old shelving and patching holes at $100–$500. Only one publisher prices these, so the calculator leaves them out; budget for them if your old closet has built-ins.
  • Paint. Painting is not priced here, because the one closet-specific figure covers only small walk-ins. Price it on the painting cost calculator.

Every extra the calculator prices, and where its figure comes from:

  • LED strip or puck lights: $200–$800 — Angi $200–$800; Fixr's sensor lights $200–$500 sit inside
  • New ceiling light (electrician): $800–$2,000 — Fixr recessed $800–$2,000; HomeAdvisor $800–$1,000
  • Drawers: $75–$200 each — Fixr $75–$200 each; Bob Vila $80–$200
  • Island with drawers: $1,000–$2,500 — Fixr and Bob Vila $1,000–$2,500; Angi $1,000–$3,000
  • Full-length mirror: $100–$300 — Fixr and Bob Vila $100–$300; Angi $100–$500
  • Shoe rack or cubbies: $50–$75 — Fixr and Bob Vila $50–$75; Angi $50–$200
  • Jewelry drawer or tray: $75–$150 — Fixr and Bob Vila $75–$150; Angi $75–$200

Do it yourself or hire a pro?

Wire and modular kits are made for homeowners. You need a drill, a level, a tape measure and a stud finder. A stud finder is a small tool that finds the wooden posts inside the wall. Screwing into those posts keeps the system solid. HomeGuide says a small reach-in takes a pro about 4 hours; allow a weekend if it is your first.

Hire someone if the walls are crooked, the closet is a walk-in with corners, or you want drawers and doors that must line up. Mid-range and custom systems are only sold installed.

Questions to ask a closet company

  • How many linear feet is this quote for, and what is the price per foot?
  • What is the material: wire, laminate, melamine, MDF or solid wood? How thick are the shelves?
  • Is installation included? Is removing the old shelving included?
  • Which parts are adjustable later, and which are fixed?
  • Do drawers have soft-close slides? What is the weight rating?
  • Does lighting need an electrician, and is that in the price?
  • Is there a design fee, and is it credited if I buy? (Fixr: $100–$500 where charged.)
  • What warranty do you give on parts and on installation?
  • Can I have a written quote that lists every item?

HomeGuide also suggests getting at least three quotes with similar plans and not picking the lowest one by default.

Methodology

  • Every figure is US national and was read on 16 October 2026. The cost guides are secondary sources, dated November 2022 (Bob Vila) to June 2026 (HomeAdvisor). Fixr's tables, the backbone for installed systems, are dated January 2025. Kit prices are retail prices on 16 October 2026, so they reflect today.
  • Kit tiers divide each kit's price by the widest wall it fits. That is the cheapest way to cover a foot of wall with that kit. The Elfa price was a sale price that day; full price was about 40% higher.
  • Installed tiers use Fixr's and Angi's per-linear-foot bands. Low and high come from the published bands; “typical” is our midpoint.
  • The 42.5% labor share for installed systems comes from Fixr's own figures: labor of $55–$200 per foot inside a $150–$450 per foot total. It is an estimate.
  • Walk-ins get two corner units at Fixr's installed shelving price. That is our modelling choice, because no publisher prints a walk-in premium per foot.
  • No publisher prints a regional closet price. The metro option uses federal carpenter wage data (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025) on the labor part only.
  • A line needs two readable sources to be priced. Wood veneer (Fixr only) and demolition (Angi only) are shown but not priced. Building a new closet with framing and drywall is out of scope.

An installed laminate system is $125-$150 per linear foot on both Fixr and Angi. A custom built-in runs $150-$450 per linear foot on Fixr, with California Closets at $175-$350 on Fixr's and Bob Vila's third-party figures (the company publishes no price list). Frequently asked questions

How much does a closet remodel cost?

It depends most on the system you pick. An 8 foot reach-in with a mid-range laminate system, installed, comes to $1,000–$1,200 in this calculator. The same closet with a wire shelving kit you put up yourself is about $114–$185. HomeGuide puts a standard closet remodel, a ready-made organizer plus paint, at $500 to $2,500, and a premium remodel at $2,500 to $12,000.

How much does a walk-in closet system cost?

A 7 by 10 foot walk-in has about 24 linear feet of wall. With a standard custom system (laminate or melamine finish), LED lights, four drawers and an island, this calculator gives $5,200–$15,300, with $10,250 as its midpoint. Published walk-in ranges vary a lot: HomeGuide and Angi say $1,000 to $8,000, and Fixr says $5,000 to $10,000 for a custom walk-in.

What does a closet system cost per linear foot?

A wire shelving kit is about $14.24–$23.17 per foot of wall at Home Depot, materials only. A modular kit, such as a laminate tower or an Elfa-type track system, is about $27.83–$131.25. A mid-range laminate system installed for you is $125–$150 (Fixr and Angi), and a full custom built-in is $150–$450 (Fixr).

How much do California Closets cost?

California Closets does not publish a price list. Fixr and Bob Vila both print $175 to $350 per linear foot for the brand. HomeGuide prints $175 to more than $1,800 per linear foot, depending on the design. Those are third-party figures, not the company's own. Get a written quote with the linear feet and materials listed.

Can I install a closet system myself?

Yes, if it is a wire or modular kit. You need a drill, a level and a stud finder to find the wooden posts inside the wall. Hiring a handyman to put up a kit costs about $21.67–$33.48 per linear foot (Homewyse). HomeGuide says a small reach-in takes about 4 hours. Mid-range and custom systems are sold installed.

How do I measure a closet in linear feet?

Measure along the floor each wall that will get shelves, rods or drawers, and add them up. HomeGuide counts the back wall plus both side walls. A 6 foot wide, 2 foot deep reach-in is 6 + 2 + 2 = 10 linear feet. A 7 by 10 foot walk-in is 10 + 7 + 7 = 24. Leave out the door wall.

Is a custom closet worth the money?

It can be, if you will use it for years. Fixr and Bob Vila both say a custom closet returns about 50% to 100% of its cost when you sell. A custom system is built to fit and lasts like furniture. A kit costs a fraction as much and can be moved later. If you are selling soon, a kit plus paint is the cheaper way to make a closet look better.
