The panel is the indoor half. Most quote gaps are outdoors.
When two electricians quote “a 200 amp upgrade” and the numbers are thousands apart, the usual explanation is not that one of them is expensive. It is that they are quoting different jobs, and the difference is almost always outside the house.
Inside is the load centre — the box with the breakers. Outside is a meter socket, and on most houses a mast or conduit carrying the service-entrance conductors down from the weatherhead to that meter. Those conductors are sized for the service you have now. Raising the amperage generally means they cannot legally carry the new service, so they get replaced along with the meter. That is the difference between a $200–$800 meter socket swap and an $1,800–$3,500 full exterior service replacement.
Those two figures come from two different publishers and they are not two prices for the same job. Fixr's $200–$800 is a meter box replacement; This Old House's $1,800–$3,500 is a meter installation covering the exterior service. This calculator keeps them as separate scopes and never merges them into a single “meter” number, because merging them would erase the exact distinction you need in order to read a quote.
The one cost on this page that nobody publishes
The wires running from the utility pole, or from an underground transformer, to your weatherhead are the service drop, and they belong to the utility. Your electrician does not own them, cannot touch them, and cannot price them.
Whether that drop has to change when you upgrade is the utility's call. Many utilities replace it free as a matter of course when a customer increases their service. Some charge. And where your upgrade pushes a shared neighbourhood transformer past its rating, the utility may have to uprate the transformer itself — which can run into thousands of dollars and add months to the timeline.
Neither cost guide behind this page publishes a national band for any of that, so this calculator adds nothing for it and says so on the result. A plausible-looking number with no source behind it would be worse than an honest blank. Call your utility before you accept an electrician's quote — on some properties the answer decides whether the project happens at all.
Where the two sources agree, and where they fall apart
Two national guides sit behind the amperage ladder above: Fixr (page updated 31 January 2025) and This Old House (page updated 31 March 2026). At the tiers most people actually buy they broadly agree, with This Old House consistently lower — which means the figures here run conservative rather than optimistic.

The 400 amp row is the honest problem on this page. Fixr's band and This Old House's band are disjoint — they do not touch. There is no defensible midpoint between $8,000–$12,000 and $2,000–$4,000, so none is invented: the calculator uses Fixr's figure because Fixr supplies the rest of the ladder, and tells you on the result that the number is disputed. If you are pricing a 400 amp service, treat what you see here as an upper bound and get two local quotes.
Why amperage is a ladder and not a multiplier
It would be tidier to say a 200 amp service costs roughly 1.6× what a 100 amp service costs and scale from there. The published tiers do not behave that way, and the reason matters: a residential 400 amp service is usually two 200 amp panels fed from heavier service equipment, not one bigger box. The cost steps up at that boundary rather than sliding.
A multiplier model would smooth away exactly the cliff a homeowner needs to see, and it would make the 150 amp option — genuinely useful, frequently overlooked, and often the right answer when 100 amp is tight but 200 amp would force a full service-entrance replacement — look like an arbitrary point on a line instead of a real choice.
What this calculator assumes, stated plainly
- The amperage ladder is one publisher's, used whole. An amperage ladder has to be monotonic to mean anything, and Fixr and This Old House tier their figures differently enough that interleaving them produces a ladder neither publisher states. Fixr's is used throughout; This Old House is carried as the cross-check in the table above.
- The permit is always included. Service work on a main panel is permitted work essentially everywhere in the United States, and $50–$300 is the one figure both publishers quote identically. Making it optional would let you build an estimate that is wrong in the place the sourcing is strongest.
- The utility service drop is flagged, never priced. See above. There is no band because there is no published band.
- The rewiring band is enormous on purpose. Fixr's $500–$4,500 spans replacing a single circuit and replacing most of a house, and this calculator does not narrow it, because nothing you can tell a web form determines which end you are on. If your home predates the mid-1960s, treat a result with rewiring ticked as a planning range, not a quote.
- Not modelled: panel relocation (This Old House prices it at $800–$3,000, but it is a different project from an upgrade), whole-house surge protection, generator interlocks, and the cost of bringing unrelated code violations up to standard once an inspector is in the house. Each is real; none is priced in a form that can be applied to a specific job here.

Priced as an installed job, not per unit. The meter socket, the mast and service-entrance conductors, the permit and inspection, and any branch rewiring are all priced SEPARATELY below, because they are separately scoped in the trade and are the reason two quotes for 'a 200 amp upgrade' can differ by thousands. National figures for 2026.). The amperage ladder is Fixr's (page updated 2025-01-31), used whole rather than blended, because it is the only fetched source publishing every tier and an interleaved ladder would not be monotonic. This Old House (page updated 2026-03-31) agrees at 100A ($800-$1,500 against Fixr's $1,200-$1,800) and at 200A ($1,300-$3,000 against Fixr's $1,800-$4,500), sitting lower at both, so these figures run conservative. Does the utility charge to upgrade the service drop?+
It depends on your utility, and no national cost guide publishes a figure for it — which is why this calculator flags it and deliberately adds nothing. The wires from the pole or the underground transformer to your weatherhead belong to the utility, not to your electrician. Many utilities replace that drop free when a customer upgrades their service. Some charge for it. Where the upgrade means the utility has to uprate a shared transformer, the bill can run into thousands and the timeline into months. Calling your utility before you accept an electrician's quote is the only way to find out, and it is worth doing first because the answer can change whether the project makes sense at all.

This is the one number on this page where the published sources contradict each other outright, and it is worth knowing that before you budget. Fixr puts a 400 amp service at $8,000–$12,000 installed. This Old House puts the same tier at $2,000–$4,000 for panel plus installation, or $4,000–$6,000 as a new installation. Those bands do not overlap, so there is no honest average to take and none is taken here — the calculator uses Fixr's figure because Fixr supplies the rest of the amperage ladder, and states the dispute rather than hiding it. The underlying reason 400 amp is expensive and hard to price is that it is not simply a bigger 200 amp panel: a residential 400 amp service is usually two 200 amp panels fed from heavier service equipment. Do I need 200 amp service, or is 100 amp enough?+
100 amp service comfortably runs lighting, a refrigerator, a conventional gas furnace and ordinary household loads, and millions of homes live on it happily. It starts to run out when you add large electric loads: central air conditioning, an induction range, an electric water heater, a heat pump, or an EV charger. Any two of those together is usually the point at which 100 amp stops being enough. 150 amp is a genuine middle option that is often overlooked and costs $1,500–$2,800, and it can be the right answer when 100 amp is tight but going to 200 amp would force a full service-entrance replacement you would rather avoid.
What unexpected costs come up during a panel upgrade?+
The big one is branch-circuit rewiring, and it is usually discovered with the old panel already off the wall. A panel upgrade transfers your existing circuits onto a new panel, which only works if those circuits are safe to reconnect — knob-and-tube wiring, ungrounded two-wire cable and aluminium branch circuits often are not. Fixr prices rewiring at $500–$4,500, and that band is enormous because it spans replacing one circuit and replacing most of a house. If your home predates the mid-1960s, budget for the possibility. The smaller surprises are a separately billed inspection at $125–$250 where the jurisdiction does not fold it into the permit, and a sub-panel at $400–$1,750 if the new service is also feeding a garage or an outbuilding.
