Why the cheapest method per foot is often not the cheapest job
Every published rate says the same thing: digging is the cheapest way to buy a foot of new sewer pipe. Open-trench replacement runs $50–$200 per foot against $60–$200 for pipe bursting and $90–$250 for CIPP lining. If the per-foot rate were the whole story, nobody would ever pay for trenchless.
The per-foot rate is not the whole story because it buys pipe, and the second half of the bill buys surface. An open trench opens roughly two feet of ground along the entire run — 160 square feet on an 80-foot lateral. Both trenchless methods work from an access pit at each end and disturb nothing in between, so they open roughly 32 square feet whether the run is 30 feet or 130.
Multiply those two areas by what it costs to put the surface back — $4.50–$12 per square foot for lawn, $1–$25 for a concrete driveway — and the ranking can invert. A short run across grass is almost always cheapest dug. A long run under a driveway frequently is not. That inversion is the single decision this page exists to help you make, which is why the calculator prices all three methods on your run rather than only the one you picked.

Note the order of operations that implies: get the camera inspection first. It costs $100–$500 and it is the step that decides whether the cheaper trenchless option is even available to you. What this calculator assumes, stated plainly
- A two-foot trench width and two 4×4 ft access pits. Neither cited source publishes a trench width or a pit size, so these are this calculator's own geometric assumptions, used only to turn a length of pipe into an area of surface. Nothing else depends on them.
- Depth positions the open-trench estimate inside its published band — it does not scale it. The sources publish one open-trench range covering every depth and no depth multiplier. Rather than invent one, a shallow run is quoted from the lower half of the published range and a deep run from the upper half. The estimate never leaves the range two sources agree on.
- The whole run is priced to you. Some sewer authorities own part of the lateral. If yours does, your share is lower than the figure here.
- One surface type. If your run crosses both lawn and driveway, pick the more expensive surface — it will dominate the restoration line — and treat the result as the upper end.
- Not modelled: re-routing the line, traffic control and street-cut fees where the work reaches the public right of way, and rock excavation. Each is a genuine cost that neither source prices in a form that can be applied to a specific run, so none is guessed at here.

CIPP lining pulls a resin-soaked sleeve through the existing pipe and cures it in place, forming a new pipe inside the old one, which slightly reduces the internal diameter. Who pays for the sewer lateral — the homeowner or the city?+

Does replacing a sewer line need a permit?+
Nearly always. Sewer lateral replacement is permitted and inspected work in almost every jurisdiction, and the inspection is what certifies the connection to the main.
